Flashcard Activity Idea
Learning a new letter sound
Have the children sitting on the carpet. Show the children flashcards of the letters they already know one by one. Tell them what the sound for each letter is and ask them to say it after you. Show children the new letter and ask them to listen to the sound it makes. Now ask them to say it with you. Next, have the children turn to their friends and say the sound to each other.
Place 4-6 flashcards on the carpet, including the new phoneme to be learned. Say a letter sound and ask the children to point to the corresponding letter. Say the new sound followed by one they already know, then back to the new sound again, making sure that the new sound to be learned gets a lot of turns. Now choose a confident child to ‘be the teacher’ and to say a sound while you and the other children point to the letters. Repeat with another child.
To finish off, collect the flashcards and show them to the children one by one asking for them to say the sounds they make.

Read It Make It Write It. A great activity to help children with writing letters in the correct order by reading the word, finding the letters needed to make it and sticking them on the sheet then finally writing the word.
Phase 2 Sound Mat. A colourful and useful sound mat with letters and images to support children in remembering Phase 2 letters. There is no need to provide children with the full alphabet on a sound mat as that would only make it more difficult for them to find a letter. This sound mat is ideal for those starting with Phase 2.
Initial Sound Cut and Stick Activity. Another great cut and stick activity. Cut and stick the letter under the picture that begins with that sound! Once finished trace the letters to practice writing them.
Middle Sound Activity Cards. A sample of our middle sound activity including 36 CVC word cards. Students name the picture and determine the middle sound for each word. They can also practice sounding out and reading CVC words.
